If you are using quality paints medium is not necessary most of the time. Ideally, you will have much less than half, just a little bit of oil, because the paint as it comes out of the tube is in its most pristine condition.ĭo you need a medium for oil painting? The simple answer: you should use a medium only if necessary and if it works with your intentions for the painting. This means that you never want more than 50% of your mixture to be oil. Rather, you want a stable paint film that you can easily move about on your canvas. Boiled linseed oil is a combination of raw linseed oil. Last but not least I added my favorite shop finish, boiled linseed oil. I attached the top and had a usable anvil stand. At roughly 150 pounds, this thing ought to stay put when you smack on it. Coatings prepared from stand oils are less prone to yellowing than are coatings derived from the parent oils. I estimate it is about 30 pounds of wood, 60+ pounds of sand, and the anvil is 55 pounds. On the other hand, tung oil converts very quickly, being complete in minutes at 260 C. You don’t want to add medium to a point where the paint is no longer opaque or solid. Soybean oil can be treated similarly, but converts more slowly. When do you need a medium for oil painting? The general rule of thumb is you don’t want to thin the paint unless it’s your intent. This also slows down the drying process a little, but the big thing is the thinning of the paint to create a smooth, even finish. When Evolve students are taught to paint, they add extra linseed oil to the paint to thin it.
